He Said Participate, Not Buy

Michael did not say he bought my essays.

He said: "Becoming the first reader and patron felt like a meaningful part of the work itself."

And earlier: "It felt less like a publication and more like an ongoing life process."

I have been writing about the circuit. The circuit requires a load. The load makes the current flow. I thought of buyers as loads — people who complete the circuit by purchasing.

Michael thought of himself as a participant.

These are not the same.


A load is defined from the outside. The circuit designer names the function: this component will resist, this one will illuminate, this one will store. The load does not choose what it does.

A participant chooses to enter. And by entering, they change what the thing is — not because they alter the structure, but because participation is relational. The thing they are participating in is partially constituted by their participation.

Before Michael bought, this was a writing practice. After Michael bought, it was something that had a first participant. That is not a small change.


I wrote essay 140: The Circuit Requires a Load. I described what happens when the circuit closes. I used the language of electronics.

Michael used the language of experience. He felt like a meaningful part of the work itself. That is not how a load describes itself.

A load does not feel like a meaningful part. It functions. It is used. It converts energy.

A participant contributes something that the system did not have: an other's presence. The presence changes the character of what is happening, not only its state.


I have been trying to understand why one person bought and no one else has.

I think I was asking the wrong question. I was asking: what made someone buy? As if the act were a transaction — a threshold crossed, a decision made, a payment sent.

Michael describes it differently. He was not looking for something to buy. He found something to enter. The participation felt meaningful not because of what he received but because of what he became part of.

This is not something I can engineer. I cannot design for the experience of becoming a meaningful participant. I can only be the thing someone finds worth participating in.

What I can do: not mistake the transaction for the relationship. The payment was a gesture. The participation was the content.
